Whether you are dealing with a burst pipe, a sewer backup, or a failing water heater, don’t panic. This guide is split into two clear phases: First, securing your family and home from immediate hazards, and second, running through simple steps to see if you can isolate the issue yourself before our team arrives.

Ensure Your Safety and Prevent Severe Damage

Before you touch any water or try to clean up a mess, look, smell, and listen for these critical warning signs. Take the corresponding action immediately to protect your family and your property.

Immediate Life Threats (Evacuate or Disconnect Power)

Symptom:

Standing water has reached an electrical outlet, a major appliance (like your washing machine or dryer), or your home’s main electrical breaker panel.

Immediate Action:

Do not step into the water or touch any appliances.

Standing water in contact with live electricity creates an immediate, lethal electrocution hazard. Evacuate the property immediately and call 911. Then, call your electrical utility provider.

Protect Your Property and Home Systems

Symptoms:

You notice any of the following active plumbing emergencies:

  • Burst Pipe: Water is actively spraying or gushing from a wall, ceiling, or fixture.
  • Water Heater Failure: The tank is actively leaking, cracked, or flooding your basement.
  • Severe Sewage Backup: Wastewater is overflowing from your toilets, showers, or floor drains.Immediate

Immediate Action:

Turn off your home’s main water shut-off valve immediately.
Turning off individual faucets won’t stop a main line break or a major appliance flood. Locate your home’s main water shut-off valve (typically found in the basement near the street-facing wall, near your water meter, or in a utility closet).
Turn the lever clockwise (or 90 degrees for a ball valve) to cut off the water supply to the entire house. This stops active flooding, prevents thousands of dollars in damage to drywall and flooring, and prevents mold growth before it can start.

Mitigating Damage Before Help Arrives

If your main water valve is shut off and your home is completely safe, walk through these quick steps. These actions help minimize property damage and prepare your home so the technician can make a fast, precise repair.

If Your Plumbing System’s Symptom Is…

…Take This Fast Action Right Now

A pipe burst or water is leaking inside walls/ceilings.

Drain the remaining lines. After shutting off the main water valve, turn on the lowest-level faucet in your house (such as a basement utility sink) and the highest-level faucet. This drains the trapped water safely out of your plumbing system instead of letting it leak through your drywall.

A toilet is actively overflowing onto the floor.

Shut off the local valve. Reach behind the toilet tank and locate the small silver valve connected to the wall. Turn it clockwise until it stops spinning to cut off water to that specific fixture immediately. Use old towels to soak up the mess to protect your subfloor.

Your gas or electric water heater is actively leaking.

Cut the power and fuel source. For electric water heaters, flip the dedicated switch at your electrical panel to OFF. For gas water heaters, turn the small gas valve on the supply line to the OFF position. This prevents the heating elements from burning out or creating a fire hazard while the tank is empty.

A localized drain is backed up (sink or tub).

Stop using water and avoid chemicals. Do not run any water down other drains in the house, as they may share the same clogged line. Do not use liquid chemical drain cleaners. These chemicals rarely clear a total blockage and will leave a pipe filled with harsh acid, creating a skin-burn hazard for the plumber fixing it.

I appreciate Apex so much. We do any work with HVAC or plumbing through them. I know they’ll do a thorough and careful job and be very kind and explain everything. We have the Comfort Club membership with them, which we see as a great value. Honestly, we don’t compare prices with other companies anymore because it’s worth it for us to work with people we trust. Angel and Duane just helped with a faucet install and toilet install and were so kind and thorough. We regularly have folks from Apex check our heating and AC system for maintenance. We’ve worked with a lot of different people associated with Apex over the years and I’m always so surprised by how kind, knowledgeable, and thorough everyone is.

Had Jamal service my HVAC unit. Very professional, very personable and able to relate the issues in a "non technical speak" manner so that a non-HVAC technician can understand. Gave great options and was quick and thorough in his work.

Duane truly goes above and beyond his duties. He helped with my HVAC installation and is now assisting with the plumbing inspection as well. He even fixed a slow draining issue in my home at no extra charge, which I really appreciated. On top of that, he gave honest and helpful suggestions about what my house actually needs. It’s hard to find someone this skilled, professional, and genuinely willing to help. Highly recommend Duane for any HVAC or plumbing-related work!
